Thinking big and starting small is a good strategy for success. That is exactly what the Michigan Commission For the Blind (MCB) did for its inaugural camp experience at Camp Daggett once traditional summer camp had finished for the season. The Transition Zone, as it is called, provides young adults the opportunity to discover and learn more about themselves and professional vocations in a safe, supportive, educational environment. A blend of traditional summer camp activities and career exploration exercises provided a stimulating balance of experiences for the young participants over a three day period. Julie Clark, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for MCB, worked closely with Ed Leverenz, Camp Daggett’s Facilities Manager to make the first year a wonderful success! As you would agree, there can never be enough good news broadcasted these days. Subsequently, this program gained much notoriety and the attention of over 25 media sources around the Great Lakes Region. “We want the students to be exposed to different transitional components that will assist them moving forward toward employment and educational goals,” states Julie Clark, MCB Counselor and camp program director. Ed Leverenz, Camp Daggett Facilities Manager adds that “It is always a very good sign to read on program evaluations that the number one issue at hand is that the program is not long enough for the campers!” As a result, the Transition Zone Camp will now be five days long versus the initial three days in this successful pilot program.
