Summer finally came to Northern Michigan in 2009; unfortunately it was in September while most of us were back in school watching it occur outside our windows, and now the vernal equinox is upon us. Autumn is a wonderful time in Northern Michigan, there is a crispness in the air and the big lake wakes up to remind us that it holds a trump card in its back pocket called winter. Weekend trips to camp have revealed that preparations are under way to secure the outer cabins for the long winter months.
As the past summer becomes a pleasant memory I should note how successful the season was for all of us. The less-than-favorable weather did little to dampen the enjoyment shared by all of the campers that visited us this summer. I continue to hear from campers and their parents on how this was one of the best summers ever at Camp Daggett. Our success is due largely in part to the talented corps of counselors, area directors and support staff that make up our “Daggett Staff”. They are a wonderful group of individuals that give fully of themselves to ensure that every week at Camp Daggett is the best week of the summer for that group of campers.
I spent a cold, but sunny day out at camp this past Sunday helping with the Fall Festival. As I stood on the beach admiring the vibrant display of colors, I watched a camper from this summer excitedly tugging on their parent’s arms guiding them around the camp, telling tales of their “week at Daggett”. The glow of this child’s smile and the high pitch of their voice told it all, a happy camper. We have already started our preparations for the summer of 2010, our 85th year of camping. I hope to see you there, on the shores of Walloon. Until then, keep planting trees.
